The Hickory Crawdads are affiliated with the Texas Rangers and play out of L.P Frans Stadium in Hickory, North Carolina. The Crawdads were chosen over other names such as “Woodchucks”, “Hound Dogs”, “Valley Cats”, and “River Rats”. Needless to say they chose the best name. Hickory Crawdads is one of the most solid names in MiLB.
The Modesto Nuts are affiliated with the Seattle Mariners and play their home games at John Thurman Field in Modesto, California. The name comes from Modesto being one of the Nut capitals of the world. The name is not necessarily my favorite but the logo sets it apart from most.
The Lansing Lugnuts are affiliated with the Oakland Athletics and they play their home games at Jackson Field at Thomas M. Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing, Michigan. They share their name with Michigan State and that’s where the long name comes from. The team's name did not go over well with fans, the frontrunner was the “Lansing River Dragons”. Lansing Lugnuts sounds much better plus it makes sense coming from the automobile industry in Michigan. Alliteration puts it above others.
The Richmond Flying Squirrels are affiliated with the San Francisco Giants and play their home games at “The Diamond” in Richmond, Virginia. Their stadium is one of my favorites I’ve seen in the Minor Leagues. They got their name from a fan contest but one of the other names that were considered were the “Richmond Hush Puppies” which would’ve been a top 2-3 team name easily.
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies are affiliated with the New York Mets and play their home games at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, New York. The name is ridiculous and the more ridiculous the better when it comes to making it on Minor League Baseball Team Names lists. They got their name from a fan who said she would dream about “ponies rumbling right off the carousel”. So, not really sure what to do with that information.
The Omaha Storm Chasers are affiliated with the Kansas City Royals and play their home games at Werner Park in Omaha, Nebraska. Their name is great due to it relates to the area and it sounds like a real team name too. Their logo is clean along with them being one of the most historic minor league baseball teams. They got their name from a fan contest like most teams.
The Akron Rubberducks are affiliated with the Cleveland Indians and play their home games at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio. Once again, the more ridiculous the name, the higher you get on the list. Akron Rubberducks name is an ode to the rubber industry that has “deep roots” in Akron. The other finalists were, “Gum Dippers”, “Tire Jacks”, and “Vulcans”. They clearly picked the best name.
The Rocket City Trash Pandas are affiliated with the Los Angeles Angels and play their home games at Toyota Field in Madison, Alabama. The Trash Pandas are a brand new Double AA team that were supposed to start playing in 2020 but due to COVID had to postpone their debut. The logo is phenomenal and got their name from the movie Guardians of the Galaxy 2 where the Raccoon, “Rocket” was called a Trash Panda.
The Montgomery Biscuits are affiliated with the Tampa Bay Rays and play their home games at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama. It’s hard to argue that there is a better name than the Montgomery Biscuits and even more difficult to say there is a better logo. The logo makes me believe “Big-mo” the biscuit should be in the McDonalds cartoons with Grimace and Mayor McCheese. Plus with the team being in the south, there’s nothing more southern than biscuits.
The Carolina Disco Turkeys are an independent team and play their home games at Truist Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. They share the stadium along with the Winston-Salem Dash. I was fortunate enough to throw a first pitch for them which means they had to be number one. Even if I had never known anything about this amazing team, they easily have to be number one with having the perfect name and logo for minor league baseball. The name comes from “what we call Peacocks in the Triad region of North Carolina''. The logo is perfect and like I mentioned before, I’m not sure it gets more ridiculous than Disco Turkeys. The logo is easily the best I’ve seen as well with it looking serious enough but also being able to use an amazing name like Disco Turkeys.
